#17/20 Tejiendo Futuros: towards Socio-Multi-Education – Panajachel, Guatemala

“Tejiendo Futuros” (Weaving futures) is a non-profit organisation committed to the development of conscious beings who are capable of building an empowered and resilient community, with strong families who responsibly benefit from and develop entrepreneurship in pursuit of sustainable living.

The socio-cultural project takes place next to Lake Atitlán, in Panajachel (Guatemala) in a rural area of Mayan tradition and territorialisation, like the whole Guatemalan territory. There, in addition to traditional plants, we incorporate into the curriculum the Mayan worldview, their games, designs, drawings, singing, dancing, headdresses, textiles, ceremonies, symbols of our ancestors and, of course, the well-known Mayan calendar.

85% of the beneficiary families live below the poverty level. The work of “Tejiendo Futuros” is translated into educational and social-economic actions such as:
– Woman empowerment
– Entrepreneurship
– Peace Culture (reducing gender violence). 50% have suffered some kind of violence (including kidnapped and disappeared family members).
– Emotional support, Family empowerment (father and mother together).
There is great emotional, cognitive, social and economic work that marks the first steps of a real Socio-Multi-Education, based on solidarity, horizontality, respect and affection.

Since one of its purposes is to empower children and adolescents through processes focused on providing holistic education, new objectives were incorporated in order to guarantee the effectiveness of the project. It now consists of three programmes designed to meet the basic needs of children and parents: El Árbol de la Niñez (holistic education), Kaulew (agroecology) and Familias Fortalecidas (psychosocial care). “Tejiendo Futuros” is made up of 28 consultants and 57 partner families.

As regards the educational programme El Árbol de la Niñez, its objective is to offer a holistic education through the ASIRI Methodology (smile in Quechua) and Pedagooogia 3000 / Educatiooon 3000 which focus on the integral development of the Being. The pedagogical processes are based on human rights and education in values to promote the development of skills, abilities, healthy relationships, teamwork and the acquisition of knowledge through experience. Currently, this programme contributes to the integral development of 75 students: 42 boys and 33 girls between the ages of 4 and 15.

After three years of hard work, significant progress has been made in the development of the project, which is translated into invaluable contributions to the partner families. This would not have been possible without the tireless work of dozens of consultants, volunteers and donors who have lovingly given what their conditions have allowed them to see this project flourish.

There is much to do, this is only the beginning of a journey that has just begun.
